Janka Hardness
Hardwood flooring durability
While there are many factors to consider when choosing your
hardwood flooring, durability of your hardwood is definitely one
factor to think about.  The harder a wood is, the more durable
and strong it tends to be.  A very popular choice is red oak,
such that it has become a benchmark in measuring.  Each
hardwood species and type has it's own characteristics and
strength
.
Janka is a test that measure the hardness of a wood.  The
test measures the force required to push a steel ball with a
diameter of 11.28 millimeters (0.444 inches) into the wood
to a depth of half the ball's diameter, thereby giving an idea
of it's hardness and durability.
The higher the number, the harder the wood.
